Product Description
Built like a fire staff. Balanced like a spinning pen.
The Fire Finger Staff is a 32 cm fire spinning pen designed specifically for pen spinning techniques. It keeps the compact scale, fast response, and fingertip control of a spinning pen, while using construction principles taken from full-sized fire staffs.
The idea goes back many years. When Ian Jenson and Kuma Films first wanted to film fire pen spinning, there was no established fire pen available at the time. To our knowledge, nobody had made one specifically for this purpose before.
David Baron of Wizard of Flow, one of the finest contact staff makers out there, built a special fire spinning pen and shipped it to Taiwan so the project could happen. That prop became the starting point for the idea.
The original Kuma Films fire pen spinning video:
Years later, while working with Guillaume Bellet of Juggling Calling, Ian learned how full-sized fire staffs are built and developed a much deeper understanding of fire-prop construction. Combined with his long experience in pen spinning, this gave him a new way to revisit the original idea.
Rather than simply scaling down a conventional fire staff, he adjusted the dimensions, weight distribution, and overall balance specifically for modern pen spinning techniques.
The result is a prop that weighs only 58 g dry and measures 32 cm from wick to wick. A 10 mm 7050-T6 aluminium core keeps the structure rigid and responsive, while braided Isis-style aramid wick heads provide enough weight at both ends to create stable momentum without making the prop feel heavy.
The aluminium core and metal structure are fully covered with flame-retardant silicone, leaving no exposed metal surfaces. This follows the same basic construction logic used in full-sized fire staffs, adapted to a much smaller prop that operates close to the hands.
This is not simply a miniature fire staff, and it is not a normal spinning pen with fire added to the ends. It is a fire prop built around the movement language of pen spinning.
Specifications

- Colour: Black
- Overall length: 32 cm, including wick heads
- Dry weight: 58 g
- Core: 10 mm diameter 7050-T6 aluminium
- Wick: Braided aramid / Kevlar Isis-style wick
- Wick head size: Approx. 3.4 × 3.5 cm each
- Effective burn time: Approx. 2 minutes with lamp oil

The wick may continue burning beyond approximately 2.5 minutes, but the flame gradually becomes smaller. Actual burn time varies with fuel, wick condition, movement, and environment.
Important Fire Safety
This is an advanced fire prop intended for experienced fire spinners aged 18 and over. Because of its compact 32 cm length, the flames are much closer to the hands, arms, body, and clothing than on a conventional fire staff. Good spatial awareness and reliable control of the prop are essential before attempting to use it with fire.
What to Wear
Wear close-fitting, non-flowing clothing made from natural fibres. Suitable choices include 100% cotton, denim, wool, and leather. Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended.
DO NOT light this prop while wearing polyester, nylon, acrylic, spandex / Lycra, fleece, or other easily melted synthetic fabrics. Many synthetic fabrics can melt when exposed to heat and may stick to the skin, making a burn significantly worse. Always check the fabric label before spinning, as clothing made from synthetic blends can still melt.
Avoid loose sleeves, scarves, tassels, fringe, flowing costumes, or any clothing that can swing into the flame. Long hair must be tied back and fully secured before ignition.
Natural fibres are not fireproof and can still burn. Appropriate clothing reduces risk but does not make fire spinning safe.
Fueling
MAXIMUM DIP TIME: 2 SECONDS.
The compact wick heads require very little fuel. Do not soak the wick. Dip only the wick heads, for no more than 2 seconds, then thoroughly remove all excess fuel before ignition.
Never light the prop if fuel is dripping or spraying from the wick. The wick, shaft, grip, hands, and surrounding area should be free from excess fuel before ignition.
- Always spin off excess fuel completely before lighting.
- Keep the fuel station, spin-off area, and ignition area separate.
- Keep fuel containers closed and well away from open flame.
- Do not re-dip or refuel a hot or smouldering wick.
- Allow the prop to extinguish and cool completely before refuelling.
- Use the prop only in a suitable open area with appropriate fire-safety equipment nearby.
- Do not practise fire spinning alone. A trained fire safety person is strongly recommended.
Fire spinning involves an inherent risk of burns, fuel-related accidents, and fire. These instructions are only a basic product-specific safety guide and are not a substitute for proper fire-spinning training.
